The Regent and Ranger Class

Older and larger than the Siluria light cruisers that replaced them, Regent class light cruisers date back to the Dark Age of Technology and were already in decline when the Emperor first began his Great Crusade across the galaxy. This ship relied on weapons systems and components that were no longer reproducible by the Adeptus Mechanicus, in particular a phased-array excimer coil for its dorsal lance that greatly boosted its output. This was the first time a long-range lance was placed on an Imperial vessel, and because these components were no longer available, makeshift repairs and substitute parts occasionally hampered the reliability of this weapons system. Precious few of these vessels remain in the fleets of the Imperium, and those that remain are usually assigned deep space patrol duties and as escorts to Explorator carracks or rogue trader convoys, or they are tasked to other assignments that take them typically away from the heat of battle. Unfortunately, a majority of the ships representative of this type have been converted into heavy carracks, with their complex dorsal lance armament replaced with a simple short-range weapons battery and their gun decks stripped of any remaining serviceable weapons systems save a rudimentary weapons fit providing for a transport capacity roughly double that common to typical freighters used by the Imperium. The increase of available power created by the removal of the weapons fit enabled these carracks to increase their shield strength and improve the number of turrets in its defensive grid, improvements that were made necessary in its new role. These ships were designated the Ranger class, and they were the first ships organized by the ancient guilds that operated them into rogue trader fleets that spread the influence of the Imperium to the very edges of the galaxy. These vessels typified by the Santissima Terra and Legatos Omicron became legends in their own right and bought great riches to the great trading guilds of Terra. However, when surviving examples of these ancient but still battle-ready light cruisers are required to perform, the fierce war-song from their many gun batteries pours forth with a vengeance capped with a lance that can still thrust forward at a range exceeding any carried by more modern Imperial light cruisers when working at peak condition, most notably when the Regent light cruiser Allegiance was instrumental in seeing that the Explorator carrack Dawntreader was able to return safely to Imperial-held space after they were both suddenly attacked by Fra’al raiders while surveying an uncharted system near the White agri-world.

Notes:
Regent light cruisers are equipped with an experimental long-range lance that proved to be problematic. The lance is effective to 45cm, if a 5+ is rolled on a D6.

Notes:
Ranger class carracks are heavy freighters with twice the capacity of typical transports, converted from ancient Regent class light cruisers. They suffer a -1 leadership and are restricted to +3D6cm when under All Ahead Full special orders. Its planetary assault transport point value is 4.

Famous Ships:
Santissima Terra, Legatos Omicron

Note: Ranger class carracks and Regent class light cruisers are simply unmodified old Emperor battleships from the old Games Workshop Space Fleet game. These miniatures are occasionally available from various online auctions (search “Space Fleet”). If you are unable to acquire one, you can scratch-build one to taste or use a modified Imperial transport and use the statistics listed above. Games Workshop undoubtedly still has the dies for these awesome ships lying around somewhere, and hopefully this and others from their old Space Fleet line of ships will one day be made available again.
