Back To Additional Rules

This is an update of my fleet list which was printed in the Planet Killer #1 (and only). I have tried to correct the few places that the rules had stepped on themselves, as well as the typos that appeared in the magazine. I also included rules for a Chaos Hulk, which I based on some fluff text I read during the Armageddon campaign.

FLEET COMMANDER

1 Chaos Fleet Master
Your fleet must include one Chaos fleet master. If your fleet includes any battle barges, he must be assigned to one them rather than a strike cruiser.

Chaos Fleet Master (Ld 10) . . . 50 pts
The Chaos Fleet Master may be given Fleet Commander re-rolls at the following costs:
One re-roll . . . . 25 pts
Two re-rolls . . . 50 pts

The Chaos Fleet Master may also take up to one Mark of Chaos from the following list, and may opt to take Chaos Terminators as well.

Mark of Slaanesh . . . +25 pts
Enemy vessels withing 15 cm of the fleet master's ship take a -2 Leadership penalty.

Mark of Khorne . . . +30 pts
The fleet master's ship doubles its boarding value in boarding actions.

Mark of Tzeentch . . . +30 pts
The fleet master gains a re-roll.

Mark of Nurgle . . . +35 pts
The fleet master's ship gains a damage point and may not be boarded.

Mark of Chaos Undivided . . .+45 pts
The fleet master's ship ignores negative leadership modifiers.

Chaos Terminators . . . +50 pts
Once per game the Chaos Fleet Master’s ship may make an attack with its Terminators. This is treated as a normal teleport attack, except that it may be made in addition to the vessel’s normal teleport attack. The attack rolls two dice for its hit-and-run attack and applies both results (with the +1 bonus for being Chaos Space Marines). Afterward, they may not attack again for the rest of the battle.

0-3 Chaos Space Marine Lords
Your fleet may include up to three Chaos Space Marine Lords. Each lord must be assigned to a ship and increases its Leadership rating to the value shown.

Chaos Space Marine Lord (Ld 9) . . . 25 pts
The Chaos Space Marine Lord may take up to one upgrade from the list below. However, a Chaos Lord may not take a Mark different from that of the Chaos Fleet Master, unless the Chaos Fleet Master carries the Mark of Chaos Undivided.

Mark of Slaanesh . . . +25 pts
Enemy vessels withing 15 cm of the lord's ship take a -2 Leadership penalty.

Mark of Khorne . . . +30 pts
The lord's ship doubles its boarding value in boarding actions.

Mark of Tzeentch . . . +30 pts
The lord gains a re-roll.

Mark of Nurgle . . . +35 pts
The lord's ship gains a damage point and may not be boarded.

Abaddon the Despoiler
You may include Abaddon as the Chaos Fleet Master in any Chaos Space Marine Fleet worth 1,000 points or more.

Abaddon (Ld 10) . . . 210 pts
Abaddon follows all of the special rules given on p. 64 of Warp Storm, with the following exceptions. Abaddon's ship does not gain an additional boarding bonus (they are already Space Marines) and Abaddon counts as having the Chaos Terminators Fleet Master upgrade.

SPACE HULK

0-1 Space Hulk
A Chaos Space Marine Fleet worth more than 1,500 points may include a Chaos space hulk. A Chaos Space Hulk must be assigned a Chaos Space Marine Lord to command it.
Chaos Space Hulk . . . 680 pts

THE TRAITOR MARINE FLEET

Battle Barges
You may include one Battle Barge for every full 1,000 points that your fleet is worth.
Chaos Space Marine Battle Barge . . . 425 pts

Strike Cruisers
Chaos Space Marine Strike Cruiser. . . 145 pts

Escorts
Your fleet may include any number of escorts.
Rapid Assault Vessel (Sunburst) . . . 50 pts
Rapid Assault Vessel (Daemonblade) . . . 45 pts
Rapid Assault Vessel (Assassin) . . . 40 pts
Rapid Assault Vessel (Idolator) . . . 50 pts
Rapid Assault Vessel (Infidel) . . . 45 pts
Rapid Assault Vessel (Iconoclast) . . . 35 pts

ORDNANCE

Any vessel with launch bays is loaded with Swiftdeath fighters and Dreadclaw assault craft.
Any vessel with torpedo tubes is armed with standard and boarding torpedoes.

SPECIAL RULES

All of the special rules used for Adeptus Astartes vessels apply to Chaos Space Marine warships as well. This includes the rules for Leadership values, boarding actions and hit and run attacks, planetary assault, and bombardment cannons. These rules may be found on p.52 of Warp Storm. Note, however, that Chaos Space Marines do not gain an extra +1 bonus in boarding actions for being Chaos as stated in the table on p.34 of the Battlefleet Gothic Rulebook.

CHAOS SPACE MARINE BATTLE BARGE

The battle barges of the Traitor Legions are some of the most powerful vessels under the control of the followers of the Dark Gods. Though not as powerful in close quarters as their loyal cousins, Chaos vessel's are better equipped to deal with their targets at range than those of the Adeptus Astartes. The largest recorded gathering of traitor legion vessels in the Pantheon Sector occured in M38; the Night Lords amassed fleet consisting of some four battle barges, thirteen strike cruisers, thrity-six assorted escorts, and one unidentified super-warship that was recorded as having the mass of two Emperor class battleships. This force was intercepted by the combined might of five seperate Imperial battlegroups and was barely defeated in a massive engagement that lasted for the better part of three weeks.

Notes: Chaos Space Marine Battle Barges are are large and slow to maneuver, and so may not use Come To New Heading special orders.

CHAOS SPACE MARINE STRIKE CRUISER

A Chaos strike cruisers is a deadly opponent in almost any situation. With its manuverability, heavy armour, and powerful arsenal, a strike cruiser is a match for a vessel of considerably larger size. One event that proves this point was at the Battle of Salavan, where an Alpha Legion strike cruiser defeated the Imperial battlecruiser Sword of Vengeance. The strike cruiser, codified the Heart of Agony, attacked the Dominator class battlecruiser swiftly, swept passed the slower vessel, and then struck at the Sword of Vengeance's exposed rear. The Heart of Agony was able to remain in the battlecruiser's rear quarter and cripple the mighty ship with successive assault craft waves and bombardment salvos.

CHAOS SPACE MARINE STIRKE CRUISER . . . 145 pts

Port Weapons Battery 45 cm 3 Left
Starboard Weapons Battery 45 cm 3 Right

Notes: Though most Chaos Marine bands have coped with the shortage of Thunderhawk gunships by carrying more mundane assault boats and interceptors, a few strike cruiser captains have ordered extensive refits to mount heavy torpedo launcher instead of attack craft bays. To represent this, one in every five Chaos Strike Cruisers may replace their launch bays with a front firing Str 6 Torpedo launcher at +10 points.

CHAOS SPACE MARINE RAPID ASSAULT VESSELS

Many of the escort sized vessels used by traitor legion fleets tend to be the same type as those used by the more mundane Chaos forces that defect from the Imperial navy. Of particular note are the Sirens' Hands, a squadron of Idolator raiders that actually destroyed two Imperial cruisers during an Imperial suprise attack. An Imperial task force had learned the location of a raiding fleet from the Emperor's Children Legion and planned a two pronged ambush, with several of their ships hiding in the Dangul nebulea to strike the traitors from the rear. When the attack occured, however, the nebulea force was taken by suprise themselves when five Idolators struck the Imperial cruisers' engine sections in a series of devastating attack runs. Out of the four cruisers stationed in the nebulea, two were destroyed and another was crippled before the raiders were chased off.

Another type of ship spotted in the fleets of the traitor legions are the twisted forms of once loyal Astartes vessels. The most common types of these vessels are the Sunburst, the Daemonblade, and the Assassin, debased versions of the Astartes Nova, Gladius, and Hunter, respectively. Though similar to their progenetor vessels in many respects, it is easy to see the minute differences that have come from millennias of battle, salvage, refits, and exposure to the Warp.

CHAOS SPACE HULK

A Chaos space hulk is truly one of the most terrifying sights in the universe. Though rare, Chaos hulks are fearsome and destructive forces, with enough firepower to decimate entire battlefleets and room to carry more traitor marines than make up an entire chapter loyal to the great Emperor. Though no Chaos hulks have ever appeared in the Pantheon sector, it is possible that one could appear at any moment. The followers of Chaos seem to have great power over the warp and this allows their forces to appear almost at will whereever they choose.

SPECIAL RULES: Due to the unique nature of space hulks, additional rules must be used to set these monstrosities apart from more orthodox vessels. Any rules not modified below apply to Chaos Hulks as normal.

Leadership: Due to their large size and the time lag on communicating orders, Chaos hulks always have a Leadership of 7.

Special Orders: Chaos hulks may not use Come To New Heading or Burn Retros special orders. They will not run out of ammo if they roll doubles on a Reload Ordnance roll.

Chaos Space Marine Lords: A Chaos Space Marine Lord with a Mark of Khorne will not double the hulks boarding value. Instead, the hulk will gain a +1 bonus during boarding actions.

Movement: Chaos hulks always move 10cm in their movement phase. Their speed is not reduced by Blast markers or damage.

Turning: The Chaos hulks may turn up to 45o at the end of every second movement phase. The turn is made after the Chaos hulks has completed its movement.

Crippling: Chaos hulks are not crippled like normal ships when they have lost half their original damage value.

Gravity Wells: Chaos hulks follow standard rules for gravity wells. In addition, they produce their own gravity well that extends 5 cm from their base. Treat this as any other gravity well. Any ship in a stationary orbit in the Chaos hulk’s gravity well move with the hulk until it breaks orbit.

Critical Hits: Due to the non-centralized nature of a Chaos hulk’s critical systems, do not roll for the effects of critical hits on the Critical Hits Table. Instead, the player who inflicted the hit chooses one of the following options to represent directing fire towards a specific section of the hulk’s hull:

1: ‘Target high energy systems!’ - Each hit reduces one of the following characteristics by one point (chosen by the player who inflicted the hit): Turret value or Shield value.

2: ‘Target weapon systems!’ - Each hit reduces one of the following characteristics by two points (chosen by the player who inflicted the hit): Torpedo strength (facing where attack came from) or Strength of weapons battery (facing where attack came from) or Lance strength (facing where attack came from) or Strength of launch bay (facing where attack came from).

3: ‘Target thruster assemblies!’ - The hulk must roll higher on a D6 than the number of thruster damage criticals it has taken in order to turn.

Critical damage may not be repaired during a battle.

Catastrophic Damage: When the Chaos hulks is reduced to 0 damage roll on the catastrophic damage table.

The drifting and blazing hulk results remain the same.

On a plasma drive overload, the hulk is torn apart by explosions. Instead of inflicting damage on nearby ships, replace the hulk with an asteroid field D3x5 cm long and wide.

On a warp drive implosion, roll a D6. On a 1-4, use the results on the catastrophic damage table. On a roll of 5 or 6, replace the hulk with a Warp rift D3x5 cm wide and long. Any ships caught in the rift are affected immediately.
