Additional Rules Epic 40K - Eldar
Blades of Khaine Aspect Warriors and Phoenix Lords
|
Notes
One of the biggest grumbles for Epic Eldar players with the release of the third edition, was the absence of the
distinct Aspect Warriors - replaced by three types, the basic warrior, the assault and the heavy variations.
This, for me and many other players out there, took away one of the fundamental reasons for collecting Eldar
in the first place, and a lot of the colour of an Eldar force was missing. After all, the Eldar are supposed to
be specialist warriors, with each Aspect Warrior fulfilling a specific role on the battlefield, but this new
version stripped them of their specialisation, variety and tactical ability. I could see why this was done -
to keep things as simple as possible - but I just missed the little guys.
Many Epic Eldar players out there have their own set of rules for Aspect Warriors, and while most adhere to the
background and idea, they vary considerably. So, why do I use my own? Firstly, I like my rules for the Howling
Banshees, I think that it represents them well, and I feel that the other Aspect rules capture the battlefield roles and
vulnerabilites. Additionally, I have included rules for Eldar Exarchs and Phoenix Lords as well, and bundled them
all together into a seperate detachment - so you can use them if your opponent agrees, or simply not choose this
detachment if he doesn't. Also, the points values of Striking Scorpions, Dire Avengers, Swooping Hawks and Dark
Reapers is unchanged, as is most of the profiles. This means that your detachments points
values dont change, whether you use the rules or not, and it is a simple matter to include these rules or to ignore
them each game. (Incidently, I played around with a few rules for Striking Scorpions, to try to represent their
Mandiblasters, but could not come up with anything that would not unbalance them too much. The closest that I got was
to roll two dice for each Scorpion stand in close combat, if both dice roll over the enemies armour value
then they are destroyed. Give it a try and let me know what you think.)
For the models, things are not as difficult as they seem at first - and no-one wants to convert a 6mm model too much!
Swooping Hawk, Warp Spider, Dark Reaper, Striking Scorpion and Howling Banshee models are all supplied on the standard
plastic sprues. Dire Avengers can be represented simply by painting Guardians blue, and Fire Dragons can be done the
same way, painting them red (although you might want to change the weapon carried for the Dragons). Shining Spears can
be represented by Guardian Jet Bikes, painted blue/white - and again you can change the weapon or add to the models
depending on your time and ability level.

Background
An Eldar lives for many years, and takes on a number of roles in his life. The life of a warrior is segmented into
a number of disciplines, each representing an aspect of the God of War. Each Aspect concentrates on one battlefield
role and set of abilities, which is mastered by the warrior during his training. Those warriors who become trapped in
one Aspect, unable to generalise and learn new disciplines are known as Exarchs - great warriors and wholy masters of
their field - and are the keepers of their Aspect shrine. Exarchs who are without a home Craftworld, or those who
initate an Aspect shrine, are the Phoenix Lords - characters of great renown and fearsome ability.
For more information on the Eldar Aspect Warriors, Exarchs and Phoenix Lords, see the
Games Workshop web
site.

Using These Rules
The Blades of Khaine detachment can simply be added to the normal force listing. Check with your opponent each game
before fielding these units.
If you are using these rules then all other Aspect Warriors in other detachments are automatically either Striking
Scorpions (my favourite Aspect by far!) or Dire Avengers (decide for each Aspect Warrior option, you can mix these
two types within a detachment, but not within a squad, and they are both the same points cost as the 'vanilla'
Aspects in the army list) - upgraded to Swooping Hawks or Dark Reapers as normal (the points values and majority
of the profiles of these units are unaltered for this reason). Additionally, you may choose any number of Blades
of Khaine detachments using the following details. All Aspect Warrior stands, even those in other detachments,
follow the special rules for their Aspect below.
If you are not using these rules then all Aspect Warriors use the normal rules, as in the Armies Book. Vanilla
Aspect Warriors can be represented by Striking Scorpion, Howling Banshee or Dire Avenger stands, Jump Pack Aspect
Warriors can be represented by Swooping Hawk or Warp Spider stands and Heavy Weapon Aspect Warriors can be
represented by Dark Reaper stands, and none of the following special rules are used.

Chain of Command: Farseer > Phoenix Lord > Warlock > Exarch > Aspect Warrior > Any
Any part of this detachment can be designated HQ, subject to the chain of command. If the
original HQ is destroyed then the next unit in the chain of command becomes the new
HQ.

Special Rules
| Item | Rules |
| Infiltrators |
Infiltrators count as being within command distance if they are within 60cm of their
detachment HQ. They may deploy up to 30cm outside the normal deployment zone, or add
+30cm to their first move if they are not deployed at the start of the battle. An
Infiltrator unit which is more than 30cm from its HQ unit is still destroyed if it is
broken in close combat or a firefight.
|
| Banshee Mask |
When a detachment including Banshees enters close combat, roll 1D6. If you roll equal to
or less than the total number of Banshee stands in combat (base to base contact) then the
number rolled is the number of blast markers inflicted on each enemy detachment which
has at least one stand in close combat with one of the Banshee stands. A natural roll of a
1 is always a single blast marker, while a natural roll of a six is always a fail (no blast
markers) irrespective of the number of Banshee stands in combat. The blast markers are
placed immediately and affect the resulting close combat.
|
| Jump Packs |
Double speed, triple when charging in assault phase. Ignore terrain when moving, but must
test if starting or ending in dangerous terrain. May choose to move normally.
|
| Save |
Ignore any hits on a D6 roll of a 4+.
|
| Skimmer |
Ignore terrain when moving. Takes a test if starting or ending its move in dangerous terrain.
Can make pop-up attacks.
|
| Warp Generators |
The Spiders can choose not to use their generators and move at the normal rate.
Double speed, triple when charging in assault phase. Ignore terrain when moving, but
must test if starting or ending in dangerous terrain. Enemy units may not snap fire at the
Spiders if using their generators, unless the stand starts or ends its move within 10cm of
the enemy stand. For each stand that jumps in the assault phase roll 1D6, on a 1 the stand
is lost in the warp and treated as a casualty.
|
| Stubborn |
Stubborn detachments may re-roll the dice for any failed Leadership tests.
