Review
I've recently discovered the Space Dreadnought 3000 game and miniatures by Kallistra, and I rather like
the Space Station they have just released. So much so that my son and I decided that we had to have one.
It's a classic cartwheel, an outer ring connected by four spokes to a central hub, with projecting
'arms' above and below the outer ring. There are eleven parts including the two part stand. Two parts
make up the ring, to which are attached the spokes and the lower section of the 'hub' through which
the pole of the stand projects. The upper section of the hub then slides over this to sit onto the
lower section. A smaller, round, section then fits over the pole and rests on the top of the main body.
Finally a small cap section sits on the end of the rod half an inch above the main body. There are then
four sections that fit around the outer ring to form the upper and lower arms which slope 'inwards' to
give a slightly globular effect.
The space station stands 3 1/8 inches high and 4 inches across. The parts all fit together well, in fact
mine will stay together without glue - if I don't touch it! There is plenty of surface detail and most of
the parts work well reversed if one wished to add a bit of variety. The whole is well cast in a lead free alloy.
This is a classic design that would work well with many other ranges than SD3000, and with a bit of judicious
filing and glueing could be easily customised. Personally I like the idea of using the center hub section
as a stand alone for smaller installations.
Finally, I've found that Kalistra don't just sell complete models but will also sell bits (eg the hub section,
single fighters), which is quite handy if you want them for something else.
If I were to make any changes it would be to reverse the 'arm' sections to spread outwards, which I think
someone who knew what they were doing would not find too challenging. I wonder if they are going to
produce any other versions or conversion kits for it?
